ANNABHISHEKAM today October 18 at Mahadeva temples !!!!
MAHAPERIYAVA and ANNABHISHEKAM origin !!!!

In the year 1986 some of the close attendants of Kanchi Paramacharya went by lorry to Haridwar and fetched a number of sizable copper cans filled with water from the River Ganges with the idea that the Mahaperiyava might use the Ganga water for his daily use. They placed the copper cans before the Acharya. Periyava told “About a thousand years ago, Rajendra Chola, built a large and grand Siva Temple at Gangaikonda-cholapuram, consecrated a huge Sivalingam in the temple and caused abhishekam to be performed to that Brahadeeswara Lingam with water brought from the
Ganga.

Carry some of these cans to Gangaikonda-cholapuram and perform abhishekam to the
Brahadeeswara in the temple there. Only after that, I shall use the Ganga water that you have brought for my sake." The orders were carried out. Some months later His Holiness asked the same devoted attendants to perform Annabhishekam (bathing the image of the deity with cooked raw rice) to Brahadeeswara, the huge lingam in the temple at Gangaikondacholapuram, adding that there will be sumptuous rain in the land because of the performance of that annabhishekam.

This celebration which began in 1986, on a small scale, grew into a grand festival in subsequent years and attracting thousands of people in the area and around.
Annabhishekam is held on full moon day in the Alppasi Masam to Siva Lingam, presiding deity of all Siva Temples in South India. Devotees believe that performing Annabhishekam to the Lord on this day would rid them of all their problems.

Today annabhishegam was performed in a grand manner at Gangaikondacholapuram. More than 50 bags to 60 bags of rice was cooked through steaming process, removed heat from the rice by spreading in the olai pai,put in bamboo baskets , distributed via through devotees -some chanting rudrams also- went to the Lord Pragadesswarar-Annabhishegam work - taking of cooked rice from the kitchen started about 14-00 hrs and was over at about 17-00 hrs.Alangaram was done and malaigals were brought from Ambal Sannidhi by number of devotees . Theeparthanai was done at about 18-00 hrs. Huge number of devotees were present. The devotees started darsan of Lord Pragadeeswar while rice was put on the Lord Pragadeeswar i..e from 14-00 hrs devotees were coming for darsan as they come far off places-full alangaram and theeparthanai were over at about 18-- hrs.

Annam which was put on the Lord Pragadeeswar and prasadam (neivediam) would have been distributed after 20-- hrs. Number of devotees from Neyveli,Trichy,Kumbakonamm Chennai etc. were helpful for carrying of annam from kitchen to Lord Pragadeeswar shrine.

At Kanchi Kamakoti Matam, Gangaikondacholapaurm, feeding of devotees went on from 11--00 hrs . A large number of devotees had their meals.

Due to Facebook message about Annabhishegam at Gangaikonda cholapuram, myself and other devotees were fortunate enough to witness the mahabhishegam to Shri Pragadeeswar of Gangaikondacholapuram. Nearly 1000 litres of milk, 80 kg of vibuthi, curd, honey and other abhishegam materials were used for abhishegam for Pragadeeswarar and also abhishegam to Ambal . Mahaabhishegam started about 10 am and alangaram, arti to Sivan and Ambal were almost over at 14-45 hrs. Fine arrangements were made for distribution of prasadam this year. Devotees were made to sit and given plates. Chakkarai pongal, panchamirtham, Thenga chatam, puliyanchatham, jeeragam chatam, thayir chatam were distributed without any problem to the devotees. I met Shri Ramani anna,Tiruchy coordinator,Neyveli Subramanian and my friends of Neyveli Thambras (N). Poomalaigal for Lord Siva was taken by devotees from Ambal sannidhi to Sivan sannidhi without touching the ground and fine exhibition of devotees coordination. Prasadam distribution was excellent. I was not able to see Karthi anna from Bangalore. I had not seen earlier. I do not know whether he had made the trip or not.Tomorrow annabhishegam. Cooking will start from 11 am.Arthi at 18-00 hrs. Distribution of prasadam likely after 21-00 hrs. With the blessings of Periyava.

Photography and video is not allowed inside the temple premises. So I am not uploading photos or videos of abhishegam as I do not want to go against the rules prevailing in the temple. I saw some taking photos and videos. I know Periyava is omnipotent and watching everything. I am uploading photos taken outside the temple and with too permission from temple authorities.

Gangaikonda-Cholapuram Annabhishekam coming up in Aippasi (ஐப்பசி).

In the summer of 1986, near-attendants of Maha Swamigal went by lorry to Haridwar and fetched a number of sizable copper cans (in hundreds), filled with water from the River Ganges, with the idea that the Guru might use the holy water for his bath, oblations etc..

On their return, they placed the cans filled with the holy water before Maha Swamigal.

The great Guru smiled and replied to his devoted attendants,

“About a thousand years ago, The King Rajendra Chola built a grand Shiva Temple at Gangaikonda-Cholapuram, consecrated a huge Shivalingam in the temple and desired to perform Abhishekam to Brahadeeshwara Linga with the holy water of Ganga. Carry some of these cans to Gangaikonda-Cholapuram and perform Abhishekam to Lord Brahadeeshwara. Only after that, I shall use the remaining water brought for my sake.”

The orders were duly carried out by his devoted attendants.

Few months later, His Holiness Sri Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswathy Swamigal instructed his attendants to perform Annabhishekam (sacred bath to Linga with cooked rice) to Lord Brahadeeshwara.

Thus, the practice of Annabhishekam came into existence and grew into a grand festival in the Shiva temples. With this scared ceremony the land had sumptuous rain with the blessings of Lord Brahadheeshwara.
