Periyava avoided them

It has always been the case, that, we have never returned from the darshan of Mahaperiayval  without enquiring about me and my family. Invariably, he would always enquire about the performance of ‘nitya pooja’ at the Sri Adhisthanam of Sri Deekshitar located at Chinnatirupati,Salem. The adherence to ‘suddha acharam’ while performing the nitya pooja was discussed many times in different perspectives and he has asked us many times as to how we can adhere to it.

Once, while we had been to Kanchipuram in the eighties, along with the son of Sri Tambu Deekshitar (my first cousin),who is a “ghanapaati’ ,Sri Mahaperiyaval ordered him to come near him and asked him to recite an ‘anuvakam’ from Sri Rudram in ‘ghanam’ format. (Nama:Somaya). But to our disappointment , Sri Mahaperiyaval never turned to our side, and did not even pay notice when he was told that the son of Shri Deekshitar had come with his family. We were all very much disappointed and my wife started crying, sayting that we have committed some sin/mistake which must be the reason for Sri Mahaperiyaval ignoring us. Though having not come prepapred to stay overnight , we took a room in a nearby lodge and returned to Sri Mutt to have his darsan in the early hours next morning. The treatment and reaction of Sri Mahaperiyaval did not change.

With very heary hearts,we all returned to Salem in the  evening. Our relatives informed us that my uncle Sri Anjaneya Deekshitar,(younger brother of Sri Anantarama Deekshitar) had passed the previous day. Only then did we realize that we had ‘assoucham’(pollution) just when we entred Sri Mutt and that was why Sri Mahaperiyaval avoided us. But Periyava talked to my cousin’s son, who had no such ‘aasoucham’ as he was a ‘brahmachaari”.

Sahasra Aavarati” of “Sri Gayatri Maha mantra

From  Moments of a lifetime published by shri H G Rangan Goud.

From the article Mahaaswamibhyo Chandrasekarendrasaraswateeyathivarebhyo Namo Nama
S.A. Ramakrishnan Salem

In the year 1975, a devotee of Sri Anantarama Deekshitar commenced performing “Sahasra  Aavarati” of “Sri Gayatri Maha mantra” at Adhistanam daily, without break , for a month. He decided to perfrom this on listening to Sri Deekshitar’s recorded upanyasam, where in Sri Deekshitar narrates the importance of performing of ‘Sahasra Aavarti’ with concentration , daily, without break for a month outside the house. Sri Deekshitar also cited “ Manu Smiriti’ as to  how such a person performing “ Sahasra Aavarti’ gets rid of all “ paapam’ effortlessly in the same way as the snake gets rid of its outer skin. This was done separately after performing “Praata: Sandhyavandanam”.  After completing the japams for thirty days, he went to Kalavai , where at the adhistanams of His Guru and Paramaguru, Sri Mahaperiyaval was camping.

Without talking to anyone who had come to have his darsan, Mahaperiyaval went to the east side of Sri Adhistanams. This devotee along with his friends decided to do “pradakshinam’ of the Adhisthanams. On coming to the south east side, they could heard the voice of Sri Mahaperiyaval. They climbed upon the foundation stones and clutching the compound wall, started listening to Sri Mahaperiyaval, who was facing north and so could not see the devotees.  He was speaking about how Sri Deekshitar preached successfully, the importance of performing one’s karma and and more specifically , one’s ‘nitya karma’. He was also recollecting as to how Sri Deekshithar even went to many villages that were far away from big towns and cities, as ordered by him, to give ‘upanyasam’ on our
Vaikida dharma’ under the auspices of ‘Veda Dharma Paripalana Sabha’ ( an institution founded as directed by Sri Mahaperiyaval, to spread the knowledge of Vedas, and the importance of performing the ordained karmas.) He was telling about how the upanyasams of Sri Deekshitar had a highly positive impact on most listeners.

At that time, Sri Mahaperiayva mentioned our relative who was in the Sri Mutt, doing service for some time. He enquired about the name of our relative as if he could not recollect it. aAt this time his ‘sishyas’ standing in front of him looked at us. Sri Mahaperiyava asked them whether someone is standing behind him and turned towards us.  He asked the devotee (who performed ‘sahastra avarati’ for a month) to continue performing ‘sahasra avarati’ as often as possible. (innum niraya gathri panindu iru). The devotee was delighted, as he had not told anyone about his doing the japams. When the devotee replied that he would and that he has been doing  it at Sri Adhistanam of Sri Deekshithar at Salem, Sri Mahaperiyaval, keeping his right palm on his chest, with a smiling fac, nodded his head to convey that he very well knew it.

The delighted devotee has been performing ‘sahasra aavarti’ and is naturally the experience the effects of it.  He is also in the habit of narrating the incident to many, in order to induce them to start performing ‘sahasra aavarti’ of sri gayathi mahamantram preferably in a sacred place, outside one’s house.

Discovery of Sri Atma-bhodendral Adhistanam by Mahaaperiyavaa

Before we read the discovery let us know about who is Atma
Bodhendral. The details of which are given below.

Sri Atma Bodhendra Saraswati (1586 – 1638)

Sri Atma Bodhendra Saraswati , the 58th Acharya of Sri Kanchi kamakoti Peetam, was a native of Vruddhachalam, Tamilandu and born in the year 1586. His pre-sanyasa name was Visvesvara. He toured extensively and stayed at Benares for a long time. He wrote a Bhasya on the Sri Rudram. It was Atma Bodha who directed Sadasiva Brahmendra to write the Gururatna Malika. Atma Bodhendra was the Guru of Bhagavan Nama Bhodhendra who instructed Bodendral to spread Bhagavan Namam. Baghavan Nama Bhodendral who later retired to Govindapuram to establish Nama Sidantha and spread bagavan nama. Sri Atma Bodhendra Saraswathi Swamiji attained mukti on the banks of the river South Pinakini, known in Tamil as Then Pennai on Krishna Ashtami in the month of Tula of the cyclic year Eswara (1638 AD). The Adhistanam of Sri Atma Bodhendra Saraswathi Swamiji is located at the place, now known as Vadavambalam, near Panrutti. The Adhistanam was discovered by the directions of His Holiness Pujyasri Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati or Mahaperiyava (details of which are painted on the walls of the adhistanam) and was consecrated on 17 January 1927.

Discovery of Atma-bhodendral Adhistanam

In the year 1926 while on padayatra Mahaperiyava was crossing Vizhupuram. Periyava got a divine call and suddenly entered a Village called “Vadavambalam” along with his sishyas. Mahaperiyava then enquired the elderly people in that village whether they know about any Sannyasi who lived in that village? Unfortunately no one was aware of any such sannyasi. However one old person in the crowd came forward and told Periyava that he heard that some few hundred years back there lived a Sannyasi who later attained samadhi in that Village but unfortunately there is no trace available currently about the exact place where the Sannyasi attained Samadhi.

Paramachrya realized that is the place, where the 58th Pontiff of Kanchi Kama Koti Peetam Sri Atma Bodhendra Saraswati who was the Guru of Bhodendra Saraswati Swamigal of Govindapuram, must have attained samadhi. He then wandered the entire village and while crossing a plaintain field He sensed some thing different and told one of his sishya who accompanied him to dig one particular spot.

One Kumaramangalam Sambamoorthy Shastrigal was supervising the activity. When the digging was in progress suddenly there was a huge crying voice from Sambamoorthy Shastrigal “Don’t Dig…. Don’t Dig” and fell unconscious on the filed. The sishya who was was digging shocked and stopped digging. He then gave water to Shastrigal who woke up to reality after a long gap. Shastrigal then told the following which is breathtaking.

“ I saw one Sannyasi in front of me. He was standing from earth to sky wearing rudraksha, having kamandal in his hands, wearing saffron dress, wearing vibhuthi in his forehead and about thousands of vedic brahmins were chanting vedas, then that Sannyasi uttered “Don’t dig, Don’t Dig” and then that big figure reduced to a small size and vanished. Later I heard somebody chanting “Sadasivam! Sadasivam!”. Then I don’t know what happened to me”. Hearing above Mahaperiyva confirmed is guess that is place where Sri Atma Bhodendra Saraswati would have attained Samadhi. Later in the year 1927 on January 17th Periyava conscreated a Shivaling on the Spot and constructed a Brindhavana to Atma Bhodendral. Now the aradhana to atma bhodendral happens every year there in Vadavambalam near Vizhupuram. Let us workship Mahaperiyva and Atmabhodendral who initiated bhodendral to establish nama siddantha!
